RCD Testing – Residual Current Device Safety Checks

Protect Lives with Reliable RCD Testing

At Safety First Test and Tag, we understand the critical role Residual Current Devices (RCDs)—also known as safety switches—play in safeguarding your home or workplace. Therefore, RCD Testing ensures your safety switch is functioning correctly and cuts off power instantly when faults are detected. As a life-saving device, a working RCD can prevent severe electric shocks and even death.

What is an RCD Testing?

In simple terms, RCD Testing verifies that your safety switch activates promptly under fault conditions. It simulates fault scenarios to ensure your RCD trips within the timeframes recommended under AS/NZS 3760:2022. Consequently, this proactive approach helps to identify malfunctioning safety devices before an emergency occurs.

The test includes:

  • Operational trip test

  • Trip time test (measured in milliseconds)

These tests confirm that the device will cut power quickly enough to prevent harm. Additionally, testing helps you comply with relevant electrical safety legislation.

Most RCDs are located in your switchboard, although portable versions are also used on worksites. Regardless of location, both types need regular testing by a certified technician.

Why is it mandatory for RCDs to be tested?

Electrocution is a serious hazard that can lead to fatal outcomes. While modern electrical infrastructure is relatively safe, only regular maintenance and testing can guarantee continued protection. As a result, consistent RCD Testing is vital for both homes and workplaces.

Here’s why regular RCD Testing is essential:

  • Prevents electric shock and electrocution

  • Ensures RCDs comply with legal standards

  • Supports OH&S compliance in workplaces

  • Protects your business from penalties and litigation

Furthermore, RCD Testing gives you peace of mind, knowing your environment is safe and compliant.

Our RCD Testing Service Includes:

At Safety First Test and Tag, we:

  • Thoroughly inspect all portable and fixed RCDs

  • Conduct trip-time tests to ensure rapid response

  • Document all results in a comprehensive compliance report

  • Provide reminders for your next scheduled RCD inspection

We follow Model WHS Regulations – January 2012, which mandate RCD installation and testing in environments where equipment is exposed to mechanical damage, moisture, dust, or heat (commonly referred to as ‘hostile environments’).

In Victoria, RCD testing is governed by WorkSafe Victoria under the Electrical Safety Act. Non-compliance can lead to heavy penalties. That’s why regular testing is not only a safety measure—it’s a legal requirement.

Additionally, our certified technicians ensure all tests are carried out with minimal disruption to your business operations.

At Safety First will inspect and test your portable and fixed RCDs. For each RCD, an operational trip test is carried out, along with a trip-time test measured in m-Sec to ensure the RCD cuts the power to the circuit within the recommended timeframes. Each m-Sec trip test result is recorded on the report we provide.
